| New pain relief options for lamb marking |
|
|
Currently in Australia, over 20 million lambs a year undergo mulesing. Although mulesing is performed for long-term health benefits, it is a traumatic procedure that does cause pain, stress and weight loss in animals. Recent research indicates that over 76% of those woolgrowers surveyed said they would definitely use or consider using pain relief at mulesing if available. (Source: Bayer Animal Health (n=401 confidence interval /- 4.85%)
Woolgrower research also showed that preventing pain, reducing blood loss, and promoting wound healing were as important as preventing fly strike.

Managing lambs is easier with pain relief
We wanted to address the drawbacks of mulesing by reducing pain and stress on the lambs so we decided to provide pain relief to our mulesed lambs. The improvement in the lambs was amazing. There were six or seven of us helping out and all of us commented on what a huge difference it made. The lambs were released out of the cradle and walked straight over to their mothers with no signs of mulesing pain. They mothered up straight away, and started feeding immediately. Normally they sulk a bit so it must provide instant pain relief. Two days later the wounds had healed so well they looked like they had been mulesed two weeks before.
If you want to know more about it, speak to your vet. We did, and we are delighted with the results. |

| In my opinion, as there is no serious alternative to mulesing, using pain relief is a great step forward. If you consider the lack of stress, lower mis-mothering rates and weight gains achieved, the costs are easily covered. Combining this tool with nutrition and genetic selection should give us another step forward to achieving the economic gains that we need. |

“I believe the industry needs to work together and consider all the methods available to us. There are many tried and true methods that still deliver strong production outcomes. It is also important to look at the latest trends and science. I consider the options and make the choices to suit my enterprise. Not every fad is the king hit, and not every tradition is outdated. It is finding the balance that suits the individual enterprise.” |
