Two traits drive wool profitability

After 10 years of research, the findings of the QPLU$ study into Merino wool quality and production traits were recently unveiled at Trangie Research Station in New South Wales.

The study found that around 90 per cent of Merino wool returns are determine by just two traits – fleece weight and fibre diameter.

Maternal influence a key influence on maximising genetic potential

A team of researchers, as part of the Lifetime Wool Project, is working to develop models to help graziers determine the optimal feeding conditions to maximise the genetic potential of their flocks.

A key outcome of the Lifetime Wool Project is that better feeding of ewes during pregnancy increases the production and quality of wool produced by their progeny during their entire lifetime.

Carcass value an opportunity for wool breeders

As the focus on improving the carcass quality of Merino sheep increases, the NSW Department of Primary Industries has released a timely study.

A key finding is that there are no major antagonisms between breeding for wool and meat in Merinos, meaning that breeders can improve both characteristics using an appropriate selection index.
